Thoughts about The Fades continued

I’ve been thinking about the BBC supernatural drama The Fades a bit more  these days. I dunno, maybe it’s because the autumn season premier shows have been so overwhelming or maybe its a stubborn refusal to agree with a friend of mine who dislikes it entirely. There is a certain magnetism that I find attracts me to the show.

First would be the characters. Maybe its a foreboding fear that Misfits will have lost it’s mojo with the departure of Nathan this series or maybe not. The Fades has a definite advantage as to not being tied to a central, yet impermanent element of the story. Really, how long does it take a group of juvenile delinquents to clear out a community centre of its refuse? In some ways with the departure of Nathan, Misfits has hit its “shit or get off the pot” moment.

But back to the Fades from my digression. I think it has to do with the more realistic and identifiable elements of the main characters Paul and Mac. More of us were uncomfortable and awkward in our skin at that age then smart cracking about getting caught for “stealing a bit of pick and mix”, although I do love the brilliance of that line.

For me it was the “end of sleepover” moment in episode two where Mac’s father roughhoused him for keeping him awake at 2 am. That moment opened up a depth in Mac and a vulnerability that may have not been shown by Mac on his own. Are his parents divorcing? Is it due to the current state of the economy and is he worried that they worry over which one gets him? Outside of the Fades becoming more tactile, cannibalistic and well… crankier is this an alternative storyline we’re going to see explored more?

Oh yeah and what’s the deal with Natalie? Episode Three is tomorrow night and I for one cannot wait.
